Author Bio

Hey there! I’m Jay, short for James. I’m a queer artist and student currently living in Utah. Most of my art is inspired by comic and other pop culture, as it’s something that’s really influenced me in my life. This is my design and photography portfolio, filled with assignments from the classes I’ve taken.

I’ve been drawing for several years now, and working commissions for about a year. I hope to be able to improve my skills and get a job in design or illustration. For now, however, I’m in high school, working odd jobs where I can and doing my best to learn as much as I possibly can.

Scanner Photo

For this project I brought some coral I got from Oahu and some sand that my friend brought me from Maui. I laid it all out on the scanner to capture the image. After it was downloaded, it edited it in photoshop to brighten some of the shadows and remove the smudges and fingerprints from the scanner’s surface.

Top 5 Photos

I had fun this semester and I feel like I learned a bunch of things that will help me in my art in the future. I feel much more capable than I did before, and I feel even more confident in my photoshop and editing skills than I did earlier. I had fun taking pictures of my friends and being able to show them after was fun too. I think I learned a lot.

Conceptual Image

I spent a long time on this, getting all the different photos that make it up and putting it together. I deviated from my plan a bit, and I still don’t love it but I think it turned out okay. I used a lot of masks and clipping masks, which helped select the flowers and other outlines. There’s also a lot of adjustment layers to make all of the pieces look coherent.

Fashion Poster Edit

With this image, I used the portrait and textures supplied to make a fashion poster. I went with a lot of cool colors that helped me pick what text I wanted. I also used a lot of lighten layers to get those clean silhouettes. The text and a few final levels adjustment layers came last to clean everything up and make it come together.

Posing People

(incomplete, will add a posed female portrait when I get the change to take it)

In this photo, I removed a small child’s head in the corner using the content aware fill tool. I also removed some acne

In this photo, I changed the color of my brother’s shirt from neon green to blue using the color replacer tool. It was a fairly easy process, but you has to be careful to select the right color you wanted to replace, or else it would change his skin blue too.
